Prepare study Intro
I am so glad that you are joining me on this journey through Proverbs!
Whenever I am digging deep into a scripture passage or in this case a book I need to get the back story. I need to have a full understanding of who wrote the book, who was the author speaking to, and why was it written or spoken.
Even though the words from the author King Solomon were penned thousands of years ago, does not mean that they are not relevant to me and my situations today. Like the saying goes - There is nothing new under the sun.
1 Kings 4:29-34 tells us that ‘God gave Solomon great wisdom and understanding and knowledge too vast to be measured.’ Why did Solomon receive such wisdom? Simply, because he asked. Flip back to 1 Kings 3:7-14 ~ Solomon felt inadequate for what He was being called to do, he asked for an understanding mind to govern God’s covenant people. God was so pleased that he asked for wisdom rather than selfish benefits that he granted Solomon wisdom and long life. This is a lesson all in itself. What is in the heart of the person who is asking? I saw this quote from Jennie Allen go through my social media feeds the other day and I just love it: "great people don't do great things, God does great things through surrendered people." I have so much to learn.

If you are looking for qualifications for a teacher on wisdom, than Solomon is more than qualified.
From the beginning of Proverbs we see the theme emerge of how wisdom is founded in the “fear” of the Lord. Of how we can grow in wisdom and knowledge in the practical everyday situations and relationships of life. Proverbs is included in the Old Testament wisdom literature books which include: Job, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon and Psalms.
The word wisdom in Hebrew is Khokmah which means skill – skill in the art of godly living. This is one skill that I am so excited to develop and get better at!
Proverbs 9:10 “Fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. Knowledge of the Holy One results in understanding." Knowledge passes test and accomplishes tasks. Wisdom is what guides us through the most important decisions in life. Proverbs is your daily vitamin of energy and strength.
Why Prepare? That word has been whispered in my ear for quite some time. As I began praying with my friend about this study I know that I was being prepared for something. That I needed to prepare my heart before the busyness of fall sets in on our family.
We have had a few life changes recently and I do not deal with change well. I like my structure. I like my calendar. I like my to-do list. Are you with me? This fall holds change and I know that by preparing my heart through this study that I will be on a firmer foundation when I am done. I need this.
And a completely incredible addition to this study is that I am doing it with my daughter. My daughter was 11 years old when we did this study together, she will also be adding what she is learned through the study. Many of the verse King Solomon directs to his sons as knowledge and discernment to the young. Nevaeh and I read together or we listen to an audio version (click here for a link to audio verse of Proverbs) and we journal on our own and then later that day come together to discuss. *Please note that there is talk about adultery, sex, etc. The need for wisdom lies in all areas. What better way for a discuss then a topic that is found in scripture.
I am so glad that you are joining me as well. I love spending time sinking into God’s living and active word. May it become living and active in our lives as it prepares us for the path that lies before each one of us.
How the Prepare study will benefit you:
» Pray for understanding
» Read one chapter of Proverbs each day
» Mediate and hide it in your heart
» Each chapter includes a short devotional and journal questions.
» Journal- use this as your excuse to go and purchase a cute journal or if you are like me - grab one of the several that you already own and is just waiting to have words added to its pages.
Tell you friends about this study so you can meet over coffee and share with each other what you are learning (you will be amazed by what everyone is learning).
I would love to hear from you, please leave a comment with a quick message telling me what you need to prepare for and how we can pray for you.

Chapter 1
Grab your Bible, journal and highlighter and let's get started! I have worked through the book of Proverbs a few times now. I have a rainbow of highlighted portions throughout the book. Every time I work through Proverbs different verses and passages stand out to me. I am so thankful that His word is the same yesterday, today and forever and that it can help me in whatever stage I am at on this journey of life.
Below you will read mine and my daughter Nevaeh's journal entries on what we learned through this Chapter. We will all have different verses that stand out to us. That is what is so exciting about God's Word - no matter where we are on our journey God's Word has something for everyone! I pray that you are able to receive something from what we have learned and that you take the time to write and reflect on the verses that are speaking to you. Your effort will be rewarded with how you are able to grow and flourish through this study.

Carolyn's Word
Even before I started this study the passage "the fear of the Lord is my strength" has been running through my mind. I know that this is something that I will understand more fully through this study.
Verse 7 reads "Fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge." This is the core message of the book of Proverbs, this is where I need to start. Living a life with knowledge and wisdom begins with reverence and humility.
**Additional verses to study: Psalm 111:10, Acts 9:31, 1 Peter 1:17 (wake up call for me!), 1 John 4:16-19. Whenever you are starting something you need the proper foundation as seen in the parable of the sower.
How can I prepare my foundation?
Verse 31, "That is why they must eat the bitter fruit of living their own way. They must experience the full terror of the path they have chosen."
The chapter ends with, "All who listen to me will live in peace and safety, unafraid of harm."
What do I need to take away from Chapter One?
I need to listen to Him and prepare my foundation.

How can I prepare my foundation?
- prayer
- meditating on the verses- listen to the chapter via You Version Bible app audio, close my eyes and just listen
- **think of your own, comment with how you can prepare your foundation. How do you learn best?
Verse 31, "That is why they must eat the bitter fruit of living their own way. They must experience the full terror of the path they have chosen."
- What is in my heart shines out through my words and actions, and controls my thoughts. (Luke 6:45)
- What does the Fruit of the Spirit look like in my life?
The chapter ends with, "All who listen to me will live in peace and safety, unafraid of harm."
What do I need to take away from Chapter One?
I need to listen to Him and prepare my foundation.
Nevaeh's Word
This Chapter talked about Proverbs from verses 1-7 it said "it teaches the wise to become wiser" and 8-19 it talks about making the right decisions. So being wise in life and the choices you make.
By reading this I think God is telling me that He can give me answers to the questions I might have later on in life and what it means to be wise.

Remember that you are being lifted in prayer during this time of study throughout the study. Your burden is not your own.
Chapter 2
Grab your Bible, journal and highlighters and let's keep going!
Carolyn's Word
Chapter two is an action chapter-
I didn't realize how valuable it was to me until it was gone. Then as I studied this chapter I began to understand how desperately I need to search God's Word for my every need. My life depends on it.
I love this promise:
v. 9 "Then you will understand what is right, just, and fair, and you will know how to find the right course of action every time"
v.21 "those who have integrity will remain in it"
- tune your ears to wisdom
- concentrate on understanding
- cry out for insight and understanding
- search for them (instructions) as you would for lost money or hidden treasure

I love this promise:
v. 9 "Then you will understand what is right, just, and fair, and you will know how to find the right course of action every time"
v.21 "those who have integrity will remain in it"
- This shows that I have to have a steadfastness to what I face in my everyday life
- This is not a short-term commitment. This study is preparing me to continue to grow after the 31 day study.
Nevaeh's Word
In this chapter what really stood out to me was v.2 "tune your ears to wisdom and concentrate on understanding." So really to me this chapter was about gaining knowledge from God and how the Lord grants people with wisdom and how we use both knowledge and wisdom. It taught me that it is important to have both not just one.
What did you learn from this Chapter today? What verse can you actively apply to your life today?
Chapter 3
Grab your Bible, journal and highlighter and let's learn about trust!
Carolyn's Word
As Nevaeh and I began studying this Chapter she stopped me to ask who she and her were referring to throughout the Chapter. I told her that it referred to wisdom and she said "That a good idea!" Have I told you how much fun I am having doing this study with her? Makes this Momma's heart so happy!
v.3 "Never let loyalty and kindness get away from you! Wear them like a necklace; write them deep within your heart."
v.3 "Never let loyalty and kindness get away from you! Wear them like a necklace; write them deep within your heart."
- write loyalty and kindness deep within. What does loyalty and kindness currently look like in my life? I love how one passage can lead to an entirely new study. :)
- I love how this verse gives instruction and then a benefit. I wish more of life's instructions were packaged like this.
- This is talking about first fruits. How do I give my best? How do I give the first fruits (first moments) of my day? I recently heard about a study that concluded how you spend the first few minutes of waking up each morning sets your mood for the day. This is something that I want to learn more about and try it out in my life.
Nevaeh's Word
This chapter talks about trusting God. One verse that stood out to me was verse 24 "you can go to bed with out fear; you will lie down and sleep soundly" and one verse talked about wearing loyalty and kindness as a necklace. (I had to take a picture of the drawing she made of the necklace.)
It taught me to be loyal and kind and always trust the Lord! And to try and not let him down. |
How is the study going? I know that it can be difficult to find time each day but it is so worth it. Schedule and make the time. If you are sharing on social media please use #preparestudy so I can find you!
Chapter 4
Grab your Bible, journal and highlighter and listen to a father's wise advice.
Carolyn's Word
The main theme of this chapter is to stay focused! It is so easy to be led astray, we know what we need to do but we get distracted by the shiny object over there. It calls our name, it becomes all that we can focus on.
v. 12 "If you live a life guided by wisdom you won't limp or stumble as you run"
This reminds me of chapter one and the firm foundation and that I can strain to reach the end of the race and receive the prize for which God, through Christ Jesus is calling us up to heaven (Philippians 3:14) without stumbling.
I can look back on my past and remember too many times where I have had a limp and stumbled and landed on my face. I am so thankful that I am a new creation and humbled to know that I get yet another chance at a fulfilled life (v.13)
V. 18 "The way of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn, which shines ever brighter until the full light of day"

V. 18 "The way of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn, which shines ever brighter until the full light of day"
I live in Saskatchewan. It can get bitterly cold here - I took this picture one cold morning as the sunrise shone through the hoar frost on the trees. There is something so beautiful about the sunrise - it signifies a new day - a fresh start - another chance.
The verse says that the way of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn - what a beautiful phrase. It is the first light in the darkness and then it shines ever brighter until the full light of day.
Oh Father, that I may shine like the first gleam of dawn and may my steadfastness grow so that I shine ever brighter until the full light of day. AMEN!

Nevaeh's Word
In this Chapter it talks about getting distracted and following evil and fixing your eyes on wisdom and God. One verse that got my attention was v.9 "She will place a lovely wreath on your head; she will present you with a beautiful crown." In this wisdom is a she and she is honoring you.
This chapter taught me that the greatest things we can have is our Father (God) and wisdom to guide us.

**Carolyn here- I just have to say that I do not know what Nevaeh writes in her journal until I type it in. Wow, her interruption of this chapter just gave me goose bumps. The faith of a young person can teach us so much.
Chapter 5
Grab your Bible, journal and highlighter and we are going to learn from Solomon his teaching to his sons about immoral women. (yes, you read that correctly)
Carolyn's Word
As Nevaeh and I read this chapter together there was a lot of giggling but it all led to a good discussion. Which I believe is the intend of this Chapter and why Solomon is including this in his wisdom teaching. The teaching that is included in this chapter is important to teach our sons and daughters while they are young. In today's society it isn't if they are going to be introduced to this, it is when. This is as true in the days of King Solomon as it is today.
v.21 "For the Lord sees clearly what a man does, examining every path he takes."
I have learned through the years that my actions and choices are bigger than myself. My choices affect those around me, they affect my life's path, they affect my future. I am not alone as I make my choices and the Lord sees my choices and the motivation behind those choices.
Praise the Lord that He helps me with each and every choice when I call upon his name.
Nevaeh told me that I had to include the p.s. section in her journal entry today. Bless her heart that she is always looking out for others.

Nevaeh's Word
In this chapter it talked about the immoral woman, v.15 "drink water from your own well, share your love ONLY with your wife." (in my case it should say husband) This chapter made me realize how much I need to love God first above everything else.
p.s. some of the verses ex. 15, 19 and 20 are not very kid friendly in some versions.

Chapter 6
Grab your Bible, journal and highlighter and we will have a lesson on daily life.
Carolyn's Word
v. 16-19 "there are six things the Lord hates - no, seven things he detests: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that kill the innocent, a heart that plots evil, feet that race to do wrong, a false witness who pours out lies, a person who sows discord among brothers."
Look at what is mentioned in this list: eyes, tongue, hands, feet ,mouth and actions. Wisdom is how we choose to use our all - every part of ourselves.
In this chapter Solomon instructs again about adultery. He is speaking to his sons and about their choices but there are two people that are involved in this situation. Each individual has their own responsibilities and choices in this behavior. v.33 "Wounds and constant disgrace are his lot. His shame will never be erased." Living in shame is no way to live, make wise choices and protect yourself from wounds that can never be erased.

Nevaeh's Word
In this chapter King Solomon is talking his sons how to live and what is right and wrong. In Proverbs 6:32 it says, "But the man who commits adultery is an utter fool, for he destroys himself." In this verse it talks about adultery (stealing someone else's wife) I think Solomon is saying "don't be like your grandfather or like me, don't make the same mistakes we did."
In this chapter I learned to obey our parents and not be immoral or a promiscuous women.

Chapter 7
Grab your Bible, journal and highlighter and take a look at the third lesson about the immoral woman.
**I want to mention that in the sidebar on the right you can click on the button for the Bible Reading check list. I like lists and I love checking things off of lists. This is a chart of chapters in the Bible. For every chapter you read I just highlight a square to check that I have studied it. It is the perfect size to print off and fold in half and keep in your Bible. I print one every year so I can look back and see what I studied, or you can print it and keep checking off chapter until you can say that you have read the whole Bible! What an achievement!

In Verse 1-3 I can feel the longing of King Solomon to teach his sons. For them to learn from his pleas. I am currently writing a book called "A Mother's Hope" and I can understand the heart of King Solomon for his sons.
Even though the story King Solomon tells is about a young man who lacked common wisdom and an adulterous woman. I believe that this is a message for everyone who walks down the path toward temptation. The "specific" temptation is different for each of us but it can lead to our ruin. We need to write the pleas of King Solomon deep within our heart. (v.3)

Nevaeh's Word
In this chapter King Solomon was giving another lesson on immoral women. Solomon was telling a story of what he saw out his window one night. The story was about, surprise!, an immoral woman that was married and her husband was away. She went out and found a man on the streets and told him to come to her house for the night. Solomon said not to be like the foolish. In this chapter I learned / found out that Solomon was a protective father and wanted the best for his kids.
Chapter 8
Grab your Bible, journal and highlighter and listen to the words of wisdom.
Carolyn's Word
I see that wisdom is repeatedly pleading us to listen to what she is trying to us. Another recurring theme is that we need to have our heart and path aligned with wisdom.
v.9 "My words are plain to anyone with understanding, clear to those who want to learn."
I emphasized the word "want" because it reads want to learn. Too often I expect things to just happen, to just go my way. I have to want to learn, “want” is a verb - it means I have to take action.
v.34 says " watching for me daily at my gates"
Choosing wisdom is a daily exercise. In the introduction for this study I described Proverbs as a daily vitamin of energy and strength. I need this daily vitamin.

Nevaeh's Word
In this chapter Solomon was writing about how wisdom will call you, and you have to listen.
There are a few verses that say to "treasure wisdom as gold and knowledge as silver" and "they are more precious than sterling silver." This chapter taught me to listen just in case wisdom is calling.
We are only on Chapter 8 and I feel like I have learned so much already. I am thankful for the discipline of working through a chapter of His word each day. I am praying for all of us - that this is a daily habit that will continue after this study is over.

Chapter 9
Grab your Bible, journal and highlighter and learn from Lady Wisdom and Lady Folly.
Carolyn's Word We have Lady Wisdom and Lady Folly. Lady Wisdom has prepared a large feast, Lady Folly offers stolen water and bread. If I had the choice between the two what would I choose? How does Lady Folly make hers look more appealing?
V. 10 "Fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. Knowledge of the Holy One results in understanding." This is the foundational verse of Proverbs. I found this image on Pinterest, I just loved it! I'm sure you know how things go on Pinterest, this image lead to another and another and I found out that it is Bible Journaling. I need to try this! Search "Bible Journaling" on Pinterest for yourself, there are many scripture passages that have been woven into beautiful pictures. What a creative way to celebrate God's word to us. |
Nevaeh's Word
In this Chapter it is basically two stories. One story is about wisdom throwing a party. In Chapter 9 verse 2 it says "She has prepared a great banquet, mixed wines and set the table." She has prepared a great feast, but a girl named folly also made a meal. Verse 17 says, "Stolen water is refreshing; food eaten in secret tastes the best." Folly is saying "come in and eat with me not wisdom, but which one would you choose?
In this chapter I learned to always choose God over evil, and always trust God.

Chapter 10
Grab your Bible, journal and highlighter and get ready for some every day life proverbs from King Solomon.
Carolyn's Word
I almost highlighted this whole chapter!
v.9 "People with integrity have firm footing, but those who follow crooked paths will slip and fall."
Verses that talk about a firm footing or foundation are really jumping out at me. This is something that is so integral to our faith. I have always explained integrity as who you are in the dark. When no one is watching, no one is around- who am I? To me integrity means that I am the same person Sunday morning at church as I am Monday morning when I walk into the office. That I am the same person when I hang out with friends and when I am at the grocery store, and when I am put into an awkward situation. Living a life of integrity provides a firm foundation.
v.32 "The godly speak words that are helpful, but the wicked speak only what is corrupt."
The tongue is a powerful weapon. This is something that has been laying heavy on my heart. The way we speak to one another, speaks volumes as to the condition of our hearts. Text messaging and social media have changed communication. It is far more abrupt and people have no problem hiding behind their keyboards and saying hurtful things. Ephesians 4:29 is one of my favorite verses, "Don't use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them."

Nevaeh's Word
In this chapter Solomon is talking about living a Godly life, how to be sensible and stay away from fools.
One verse that caught my eye was verse 4, it says "Lazy people are soon poor, hard workers get rich." It is talking about work ethic, but to me it meant you can't be lazy to God it takes you nowhere but if you stay obedient to the Lord he can do anything.
In this chapter I learn to stay obedient to the Lord and be sensible.

There is so much in this chapter, we are now getting in to the practical wisdom proverbs from King Solomon.
- What did you learn from this chapter?
- What verse can you apply in your life today

v.11 "Upright citizens bless a city and make it prosper, but the talk of the wicked tears it apart."
v. 25 "The generous prosper and are satisfied; those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed."
v. 30 "The godly are like trees that bear life giving fruit, and those who save lives are wise."
- I live in a very dark city. Many people have visited and asked what is wrong with our city. I pray regularly for my city. A light in our city shines brightly, but the darkness tries so hard to take control. Many citizens take a step backward excepting it as a new reality instead of standing up to let their light shine. May I choose to be an upright citizen and bless my city and my community.
v. 25 "The generous prosper and are satisfied; those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed."
- I love being around those who refresh my soul. I long to be around them. Makes we wonder if I am refreshing to those around me?
v. 30 "The godly are like trees that bear life giving fruit, and those who save lives are wise."
- trees that produce fruit of righteousness. That I may lead by example to a path of fullness of life. Amen.
Nevaeh's Word
In this chapter they are talking about rewards for the godly but death for the evil. One verse that stood out to me was verse 18 "Evil people get rich for the moment, but the reward of the godly will last."
It talks about the reward we will get which is going to heaven! Through this chapter I learned that the Lord has something planned for us, our reward.

v.3 "Wickedness never brings stability; only the godly have deep roots."
v.12 "Thieves are jealous of each other's loot, while the godly bear their own fruit."
v.15 "Fools think they need no advice, but the wise listen to others."
v.19 "Truth stands the test of time; lies are soon exposed."
v.25 "Worry weighs a person down; an encouraging word cheers a person up."
v.12 "Thieves are jealous of each other's loot, while the godly bear their own fruit."
- Last year I did a 9 months study on the fruit of the Spirit, what an incredible journey it was. Whenever I read verses about deep roots and bearing fruit it has such a greater meaning for me. (I have attached one of the video from the online study below for you to watch if you are interested in watching - I have been revamping the study and it will be available again soon!)
v.15 "Fools think they need no advice, but the wise listen to others."
- life's learning process never stops. At times, I have a hard time listening to others, but I understand that there is always something new to learn and an area that I can grow in. Heavenly Father, help me to be more open to that in my life.
v.19 "Truth stands the test of time; lies are soon exposed."
- the Lord knows what is in my heart- nothing is hidden.
v.25 "Worry weighs a person down; an encouraging word cheers a person up."
- worry is a waste of time, therefore do not do it - easier written than done :)

v.8 "a sensible person wins admiration, but a warped mind is despised."
This chapter was much like the last chapter, but verse 8 stood out to me. It takes about how the sensible mind wins admiration, and people that have a unwise mind will be disliked. In this chapter I learned to use Godly words (example: not to gossip because it can hurt the people involved.)

v.11 "Wealth from get-rich-schemes quickly disappears; wealth from hard work grows."
This verse jumped off the page at me. I have been so convicted about this. There are get-rich-schemes advertised everywhere - and it makes my stomach turn. Many people are looking for ways to make a lot of money without a lot work. It doesn't happen, many have given hundreds of dollars to learn the secrets and have gained nothing. The ads make fancy promises - it sounds a lot better than hard work but at what cost?
The reality is - it is about hard work. We have already read that in several verses throughout Proverbs.
My husband and I have had the dream talk over coffee with "What if" we won the lottery. Well, first you have to buy a ticket. After talking about a few dreams we concluded that we wouldn't want the pressure of winning the lottery. Genesis 3:19 says, "By the sweat of your brow you will have foot to eat."
We both strongly believe that the only "success" we will achieve is through hard work. Then we can feel a sense of accomplishment which you can not find in a get-rich-scheme or lottery win.

In this verse it talked about how sinners run away from trouble, while righteous are rewarded through blessings. This verse stood out to me because it talked about the sinners running away from trouble. I learned that I have to be grateful for what I receive.

v.2 "Those who follow the right path fear the Lord; those who take the wrong path despise him."
v.15 "Only simpleton's believe everything they are told! The prudent carefully consider their steps."
v.27 "Fear of the Lord is a life-giving fountain; it offers escape from the snares of death."
- I have chosen to follow a variety of paths throughout the years. The wrong paths felt very lonely and dark which accurately describes what separation from God is. After working so hard for so many years I can't imagine giving that all up to follow a path that would cause a separation between myself and my Heavenly Father.
v.15 "Only simpleton's believe everything they are told! The prudent carefully consider their steps."
- A few years ago I was asked to speak at a youth conference. I was given no topic, the leaders just asked me to share whatever I thought the Lord was asking me to teach. After a lot of prayer I received the message, I was to teach the youth to use their brains. As I began to study I realized that our youth are continuous fed information but are rarely asked to question it. What are the future generation of leaders actually being taught? This seems like a huge task for me to teach but the example set by the Beareans in Acts made my job easy - Acts 17:11 "And the people of Berea were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica, and they listened eagerly to Paul’s message. They searched the Scriptures day after day to see if Paul and Silas were teaching the truth." After studying the people of Berea, you know what I noticed? There is no book in the New Testament called Beareans. Each one of Paul's letters to the churches in the New Testament is a letter of correction to help them through a situation that the early churches were facing. I believe that the people of Berea set an example for us all.
v.27 "Fear of the Lord is a life-giving fountain; it offers escape from the snares of death."
- This is a picture that I took at Rainbow Falls in Ontario. The sound of the rushing water, the never ending flow of fresh water. I love the phrase "live-giving fountain" and that it gives us an escape. Amen!

V. 13 & 14 "A glad heart makes a happy face; a broken heart crushes the spirit. A wise person is hungry for truth, while the fool feeds on trash."
A happy face comes from a happy heart, the key to a happy heart is through seeking knowledge. Today I felt so strongly that I am being prepared, I feel like my feet are on the right path, I feel a sense joy that can not come from anything that the world has to offer. Thank you Father for loving me so.
V. 31-33 "If you listen to constructive criticism you will be at home among the wise. If you reject criticism you only harm yourself; but if you listen to correction, you grow in understanding. Fear of the Lord teaches a person to be wise; humility precedes honor."
- Today I was driving around my city, I had a few errands to do and I wasn't in a rush. While at a stop light I noticed that a driver beside me had such a grumpy face. As I continued to drive around I noticed that the majority of drivers look really grumpy while they drive. Then I wondered what I look like while I am driving around? I have a variety of moods while I am driving, I hate being late so that makes me anxious, when traffic is nuts I probably look panicked, today while I was casually doing my errands, how did I look?

- I can honestly admit that I do not handle criticism well. But the saying is true - with age comes wisdom. As I get older criticism is easier to listen to and I now realize how beneficial it is to me. If only I had listened earlier in life - how much further I would be today.

This verse talks about a glad heart is joyful and then how a broken heart is sad. I talked about this verse because I like to be happy and everyone else to be happy but when one person is sad the rest is too. From this chapter I learned to think before I speak and to try and make people happy too!

v.3 "Commit your work to the Lord, and then your plans will succeed."
A couple of years I ago I was having a pity party for myself. As a family we were going through a few struggles as is common in every family. But I was getting right down nasty with God asking Him why He wasn't blessing us when I was so busy doing all this stuff for Him. This conversation continued as I was outside doing yard work one sunny summer day. I can remember vividly reaching into the garden shed for a rake when I heard in my heart "Stop doing things for me, and start doing things with me." God gently and accurately put me in my place. I have stopped making myself busy for the Lord and I choose to work with Him in all things and I can see the blessings that have flowed out of those choices.
v.9 "We can make our own paths, but the Lord determines our steps."
I am so thankful that I have the one who made all the delicate inner parts of my body & knit me together in my Mother's womb (Psalm 139:3) as my guide on life's journey.

v.27 "A truly wise person uses few words; a person with understanding is even-tempered"
- What this is telling me is not to be a hot-headed loud mouth because it will make me look like a fool. Good advice. I have been known to let my mouth get the best of me and then I feel awful. I tend to be blunt and not everyone can appreciate that about me. I have really noticed a trend in the verses that have been standing out to me that I need to listen more and use fewer words. I am being prepared, learning is a process - I need a lot of practice.

v.7 "Eloquent words are not fitting for a fool; even less are lies fitting for a ruler."
- This verses talk about how a fool would not talk clearly and a ruler would not lie to his or her subjects. This chapter taught me that I should stay away from fools and look towards God.
My daughter and I were discussing how we are both seeing a trend emerge from our lessons in Proverbs. I called this study Prepare because I felt like it is a time of preparing. v.10 & 11 "The name of the Lord is a strong fortress; the godly run to him and are safe. The rich think of their wealth as an impregnable defense; they imagine it is a high wall of safety."
- These two verses show 2 different security systems. Too often we think that financial security will save us from everything. But that is false hope and causes us to strive for something which in the end can not save us. But humility and the fear of God provides safety from life's storms. The Bible tells us about a storm and how Peter started out full of faith to walk on water, but started to waver. But Jesus reached out and grabbed Peter's hand when he called upon his name and brought him to safety within himself and then the safety of the boat.

v. 27 "The Lord's search light penetrates the human spirit, exposing every hidden motive."
1 Samuel 16:7 "The Lord doesn't make decisions the way you do! People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at a person's thoughts and intentions."
- Often we don't realize the value or importance of something until it is taken away. When I think about the gift of being able to see the beauty in the world around, to see the needs in my community, to see the beautiful young women our girls are becoming and ears to hear my blue jay that visits our bird feeder each morning, the sound of our puppies paws racing toward the door when we arrive home, to hear "I love you" from my family. May I never take these gifts for granted, may I give thanks continuously for the many gifts that I have received.

1 Samuel 16:7 "The Lord doesn't make decisions the way you do! People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at a person's thoughts and intentions."
- a person's outward appearance will not determine whether they will faithful obey the Lord. Everything flows from the heart - which includes our morals, values and intentions. I am thankful that the Holy Spirit convicts me of this and helps me to try and be the best representative of Christ that I can in my broken human nature. How often I fall flat of what my Father sees my potential to be, but I know that he sees my intentions and may that guide me to continue to achieve the prize for which He has called me to.

Choices that I make every day affect my reputation. I want to be a positive role model for our daughters, I want to be remembered for what I have contributed to my community and the world around me. There is a lot in this Chapter. Solomon's thought process is all over. He covers gluttony, being a workaholic, disciplining your children, obeying your parents, purity and ends with drunkenness.
In the middle of the chapter we find "Commit yourself to instructions, listen carefully to words of knowledge." (v.12)
It is important to pursue wisdom which can not be attained without determination. It almost sounds impossible, but I know that with God all things and anything is possible. (Matthew 19:26) I know that I see such a small picture of what God's beautiful perfect plan is for my life, may I continue with determination down that path to which I am called.

A house is built - established - filled with family. The foundation for the house is wisdom. I remember when I was getting married - people repeatedly told me not to worry about my wedding day, it was my marriage that I needed to invest my time and energy into. The same is true as we build our home, our life as a family - we need to make sure that we have a solid foundation on wisdom and that will set the structure for our family. The second part of the verse talks about through knowledge the rooms will be filled with precious riches and valuables. v.28 "A person without self-control is like a city with broken-down walls."
A person without self-control is vulnerable, like a city without walls. By choosing to seek out wisdom it will help lead us down the path to where self-control like the other fruit of the spirit become a part of who we are in our every day lives. It is no longer a choice that we actively have to continue to make but who we have always been created to be. I am so thankful that I continue to move closer to that prize.
Paul says it perfectly in Philippians 3:12-16 "I don’t mean to say that I have already achieved these things or that I have already reached perfection. But I press on to possess that perfection for which Christ Jesus first possessed me. No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us. Let all who are spiritually mature agree on these things. If you disagree on some point, I believe God will make it plain to you. But we must hold on to the progress we have already made."

To me this verse means others can gossip and accuse you of it and people will think you did, and then you will never have people think of you the same again. I learned through this chapter to try not to gossip and have a good reputation. :)

Carolyn's Word
A specific verse did not stand out to me today. So I looked at the chapter as a whole and it is written in the negative as it discusses the fool and his folly. The description of the fool makes you wonder who would ever choose this path in life. But at some point we have all been the fool who is wise in our own eyes. How easy it is to get distracted to the worldly way of thinking. With all of its shiny things that can easily be a distraction from the path that was designed for us while we were in our Mother's womb.
Lord, help me to choose wisely.
Lord, help me to choose wisely.

Surprise - more Proverbs of Solomon,
v.18 & 19 "Just as damaging as a madman shooting a deadly weapon is someone who lies to a friends and then says, "I was only joking."
This verse stood out to me because sometimes I can't handle jokes, they hurt me. Most of my friends know not to joke with me. This verse means a madman shooting a deadly weapon is as damaging as someone lying to a friend and then say "I was only joking." later on. This chapter taught me to always watch what I say because it may hurt someone more that I know.

Thank you for joining me through this study of Proverbs. What a joy it has been to study God's word, I have to admit that sometimes it is difficult to make the time to study each chapter, but I am so glad that I have made the time. My prayer for all of us - is that we stay committed to making time to study His word daily even after the Proverbs study is complete.
What would you like to study next? My daughter has already made a suggestion for us, but I would love to hear what you would like to learn more about.

v.19 "As a face is reflected in water, so the heart reflects the real person."
v. 21 "Fire tests the purity of silver and gold, but a person is tested by being praised."
The message in verse 19 is always a humbling reminder. No matter how good of an actress I am to hide behind my words and actions, everything is always transparent before God. Then verse 21 takes it another step which is a test of my response of humility or pride when receiving praise. Do I represent the fool that has been mentioned throughout the book of Proverbs or do I choose the path for which I have been called.
Honestly I am nothing without the One that created me, everything comes from the Father.

v.13 "A glad heart makes a happy face; a broken hear crushes the spirit."
This verse talks about a glad heart is joyful and then how a broken heart is sad. I talked about this verse because I like to be happy and everyone else to be happy but when one person is sad the rest is too. From this chapter I learned to think before I speak and to try and make people happy too!

v.13 "People who conceal their sins will not prosper, but if they confess and turn from them they will receive mercy."
I have found that writing is a healing process for me. It gives me an opportunity to confess and the healing that comes from it has been very rewarding. I do not necessarily conceal my sins but I wasn't allowing myself to heal from them so that I could receive mercy and be truly happy. At times it is a difficult time but so worth the journey.

v.25 "Greed causes fighting, trusting the Lord leads to prosperity."
This verse talks about how wanting something can cause fighting. It also says trusting the Lord lead to being blessed with good things. This chapter talked a lot about through being kind you will be blessed with rewards. Through this chapter I learned not to be greedy because I need to learn that I have what I need and I don't need more.

Let's get started.
Carolyn's Word
v.18 "When people do not accept divine guidance they run wild, but whoever obey's the law is joyful."
Sometimes I read my Facebook feed or watch the news and think that they world has gone crazy. Daily we see a world that is lacking any sense of integrity - a world running wild. To find joy and peace we only need to go as far finding it through the wisdom of the scriptures.

v.14 "If a king judges the poor fairly, his throne will last forever."
This verse pretty much means that if a king takes care of his people his reign will last a long time. To me this chapter talked a lot about a ruler taking charge of people and how instead of coming to your ruler most of the time, you should go to God. Through this chapter I learned that trusting in God is better than a king. (p.s. I already knew that)

Carolyn's Word
v. 5 & 6 "Every word of God proves true, He is a shield to all who come to him for protection. Do not add to his words, or he may rebuke you and expose you as a liar."
I choose to use God's word as my marker of truth. When I am being taught something or I am listening to a speaker I verify the validity by searching God's word. I believe that it is the undeniable truth that is the same yesterday, today and forever. That is is the foundation on which I stand and I trust every detail.
The very middle verse of the Bible reads "It is better to take refuge in the Lord that to trust in people." Psalm 118:8.
The beginning part of the Chapter is how we as humans have limited wisdom, that we need to recognize our weakness in this area and that the truth can only be found in the scriptures.

v.4 "Who but God goes up to heaven and comes back down? Who holds the wind in his fists? Who wraps up the oceans in his cloak? Who has created the whole wide world? What is his name - and his son's name? Tell me if you know!"
This verse is pretty much just talking about how might the Lord is and all the stuff he can do. Through this chapter I learned that God has the power to do everything.

Here we are meeting today for our final chapter. What a month of growth this has been! Thank you so much for joining me on this journey.
Carolyn's Word
This is one of the most read and studied chapters of the Bible by women. I felt that it was almost injustice to only dedicate one day to this passage. But I must conclude my study with this verse:
v.30 "Charm is deceptive, and beauty does not last; but a woman who fears the Lord will be greatly praised."
I began this study talking about the fear of the Lord, it has been pointed out to me many times through the 31 chapters in the book of Proverbs. This chapter describes many characteristics of an excellent wife. Many of which I feel I fail horribly in. But the chapter ends with the most important characteristic and that is the fear of the Lord. That is something that I can strive to attain, which is foundational to the wise woman. A godly woman may have poise and beauty but that is secondary to a heart of godliness. AMEN!

v.25 "She is clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future."
This verse talks about how she is covered with strength and self-respect. It also says that she can laugh without fear of what may happen later. This chapter also talks about how women of noble character can accomplish many things. It says in one verse she makes her own bed-spreads. This chapter taught me to accomplish what I want so I can be a woman of noble character to the Lord.
This whole book taught me to trust the Lord and to be wise about friend choices or anything, and to keep my eyes on the Lord. :)
